Born in the Persian courts and perfected in Kashmir, papier-mâché is shaped from fine paper pulp, then painted freehand with Chinar, Hazaar Posh, Shirk Posh and Mughal darbar scenes — often touched with gold.

The craft of Papier-Mâché

The craft

The craft moves through two hands. The sakhtsaz builds the form from pulp; the naqash paints it — layer upon layer, with brushes sometimes of a single hair — before the lacquer is applied.

Each design carries a name and a lineage: Hazaar Posh, the thousand flowers; Gulander Gul; Son Posh, the golden bloom; the regal darbar of the Mughal courts.
