Luxury gifts from Kashmir: a guide for corporate, diplomatic and personal gifting

A gift from Kashmir carries a story — six centuries of craft, a GI certificate, the name of a technique and the months it took. For a company, an embassy or a family, that story is the gift. Here is how to choose well, by occasion, and how to plan.
For corporate and diplomatic gifting
The pieces that travel best are those that are unmistakably Kashmiri, personal without being intimate, and easy to present. Papier-mâché — a Darbar vase, a Chinar horse, a lidded box — is the classic gift of state from the Valley. Engraved copperware, especially a silver-coated (Ruqai) samovar or tea set with a crest, marks an occasion. Pashmina stoles in a house colour, each with its GI tag, suit delegations and boards.
We prepare sets in quantity with matched designs, engrave or embroider crests, logos and dates, and present each piece in a box with a card describing its making.
For weddings

A silk carpet for the wall — a pictorial hunting scene or the Tree of Life — is the most extraordinary gift Kashmir makes. Smaller: a carved walnut box or bowl, a Sun Chinar papier-mâché bowl as a centrepiece, a pair of engraved copper glasses.
For the desk and the office
The Fine Hazara letter rack, a walnut tissue box, papier-mâché coaster sets and pen boxes — the kar-i-kalamdani from which the whole craft takes its name — are gifts that are used daily and admired daily.
By lead time
Hand work takes time; plan the occasion backwards:
- From stock, a few weeks — papier-mâché boxes and coasters, walnut objects, copper glasses, plain Pashmina
- 2–3 months — Tilla-bordered Pashmina, engraved copper with crests, papier-mâché in quantity
- 4–6 months — small silk carpets, Sozni-bordered Pashmina, carved walnut furniture
- 8–12 months — large silk carpets, all-over embroidered Pashmina, Darbar papier-mâché in sets
Presentation and provenance
Every gift leaves the atelier in a fitted box, with a card naming the craft, the artisan's technique, the materials and the time it took — and, for carpets and Pashmina, the GI certificate. For diplomatic and corporate orders we can prepare bilingual cards and coordinate delivery to several addresses.
