The GI tag
A name that must be earned
Kashmiri carpets hold a Geographical Indication tag — a prestigious recognition that protects their authenticity and cultural identity. Only carpets hand-knotted in Kashmir, using traditional techniques passed down through generations, may be labelled “Kashmiri Carpets”.
The same protection extends to Kashmir Pashmina. Every Pashmina we offer carries the assurance of a GI tag, certifying that it was made in Kashmir by time-honoured methods. The tag safeguards a centuries-old art — and supports the artisans who keep it alive in a global marketplace.
Carpets
Silk on silk, or silk on cotton?
Both are hand-knotted in pure silk pile. The difference lies in the foundation — the warp and weft beneath.

Silk on Silk
- Higher knot densityAvailable from 22 × 22 and 24 × 24 up to 40 × 40 knots per square inch — usually 24 × 24, or 576 knots.
- Superior shineA rich, lustrous sheen, as both warp and weft are silk.
- Tighter weaveA very tight weave with a smooth, elegant finish.
- Durability & strengthStronger and longer-lasting, thanks to the silk foundation.
- Thinner & softerLighter and more delicate in hand — ideal for luxurious décor.
Classic
Silk on Cotton
- Knot densityUsually 18 × 18, or 324 knots per square inch — less detailed than silk on silk.
- Moderate shineThe silk pile gives a gentle sheen, softer than a full silk carpet.
- Softer weaveThe cotton foundation gives a slightly looser weave.
- Everyday strengthMade to be walked on, though not as long-lived as silk on silk.
- Fuller handThicker and heavier underfoot, with a warmer feel.
Pashmina
Not all Pashminas are created equal
An authentic Pashmina is handwoven from the finest cashmere of the Changthangi goats of Ladakh. It is lightweight, warm, and has a texture that machine-made fabrics cannot replicate.
