Kashmir's carpets trace their lineage to the court of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin in the fifteenth century. Each is still knotted by hand, read from a coded pattern script called the talim, in pure silk or silk on cotton.

The craft

What began as royal patronage became the cultural hallmark of the Valley. A master weaver follows the talim — the design written as a chanted code — knot after knot, colour after colour, for months at a time.

Our silk-on-silk carpets are woven at 24 × 24 knots per square inch as standard, and can be commissioned from 22 × 22 up to an extraordinary 40 × 40. Silk-on-cotton pieces are knotted at 18 × 18, with a fuller hand and a softer sheen.
