Pictorial silk wall hangings
The finest silk carpets are too fine to walk on and too beautiful to hide beneath furniture. Woven at 576 knots per square inch or more, a pictorial silk carpet is a painting made of knots — and in Kashmir it has long been made specifically for the wall.
Why silk on the wall
Silk pile catches light from the side, so a hung carpet changes as the day moves across the room — the ground deepens, the figures lift. Because a wall piece is never walked on, the weaver can use the very finest silk and the tightest knotting.
Sizes are modest — typically 2 × 3 ft to 3 × 5 ft — and the designs have a clear top and bottom: horsemen and falconers on midnight blue, the Tree of Life beneath its arch, a hunting scene in a forest.
Hanging and care
A hand-knotted silk piece is hung from a sleeve sewn along the top, over a rod or a batten, so the weight is carried evenly. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators; dust gently with a soft brush.
Questions
How do you hang a silk carpet on a wall?
A fabric sleeve is sewn along the top edge and a rod or flat batten passed through it, so the carpet hangs evenly without stress on the knots. Never nail or pin through the carpet itself.
