Garden (Char Bagh)
The Mughal emperors laid out their gardens in four quarters divided by water channels — the char bagh — and Kashmir, with Shalimar and Nishat, holds the finest of them. The garden carpet brings that plan indoors: a field divided into compartments, each holding its own cypress, flowering shrub or vase of blooms.
Compartments and panels
The Royal Taj divides its field into jewel-like squares, each with a different flower or vase — a garden seen from above. The Hamdaan repeats slender cypresses and flowering vases in tall vertical panels, like a garden glimpsed through a colonnade.
Both designs are non-directional enough to work on the floor, yet detailed enough to hang.
A palette from the Valley
Saffron, emerald and cream for the compartment garden; rose, sage and slate for the cypress panels. Both draw on the colours of Kashmir's own gardens in spring and autumn.
