The story of the piece

The mihrab — the pointed arch — is one of the oldest frames in Kashmiri design. Here a procession of arches runs around a deep woven border, each enclosing a flowering cypress, and gives way to a plain centre with a soft sheen. Every ground, from antique gold to pistachio and lilac, is chosen to set off the border's jewel tones.
